All About Adelyn - Month 6

 Loves:
- sitting
- chewing on drinking glasses
- tickles from her brother
- discovering water (in the "big girl bath" and plastic pool)
- eating
- watching leaves blow in the wind
- screeching

Hates:
- hits from her brother
- laying down for too long
- getting her legs stuck in the crib slats (who blames her?!)
- staying still while eating

Starting to:
- play with toys with intention
- wear 9 month clothes
- babble with "dadadada" and "mamama"

Oh baby girl, you are so fun to be around these days! You have a little personality and, as much as I try not to compare you to Teddy, I notice where you are different from him more now than ever. You screech more than he ever did (and I must admit I fear what this means for my ear drums in about 7-9 years) and you are more shy with strangers at this age than he was. However, you are a little flirt just like he was - peeking glances from underneath those long eye lashes.

You are the observer of our family right now. You watch everything and try with all the might in your tiny little fingers to grasp whatever is in front of you - whether that be my dinner plate or Dada's beer or Teddy's pjs as he tumbles past you (literally) or the bowl of sweet potatoes from which I'm feeding you. You are reaching for it all, and with a mighty tight grip, ready to feel and taste and explore. I hope you  never lose this hunger for life, Mae Mae. I hope I am blessed enough to see you feel and taste and explore so much more in the coming months and years and decades.

Me (struggling to push the double stroller through the grass at a park): Ugh, I just hit a big stick.

Teddy: What was it?

Me: A stick.

Teddy: Why?

Normal days

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.

Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.

One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.
~ Mary Jean Irion

Our days are pretty basic. We rise, we eat waffles with peanut butter (for he and I) and pureed sweet potatoes (for her), we change diapers, we play, we watch cartoons, we dig in dirt, we drop toys and pick them back up, we tickle, we talk about the weather. We travel short distances to "the errand store" or "the grocery store," we pick a park and explore it. Some days, we splash in water or bake cookies.

Our days are filled with mundane and typical and usual. But these are the days memories are made. On our way to school this morning (typical Monday morning, mundane even), Teddy told me his memory of the time my car stalled at the grocery store and the big tow truck came to haul it away. And it struck me that that day, every day, any day can be the soil in which something takes root.

A normal day. A treasure buried in toys and waffles and laughs and weather reports. I will miss these days, in some not so distant future, of this I am certain.

That Time We Went to the Mall and You Met Your First Eye Brow Threader

We were at the mall the other day. It's a big mall - wide open spaces and little plastic cars (that used to cost a nickle but now cost a whole dollar) to jostle you back and forth for a minute. But its the wide hallways and 4-story tall mezzanines that make it feel colossal to me. And I imagine to you, as well.

You had been so excited as we traveled over the "huge" bridge over the river, and we talked about which way was left and which way was right. You had made such good choices while Dad perused the big screen TVs and tried to explain pixel counts (or something) to me. You knew that the plastic cars awaited you.

And so I sat on a bench to feed Adelyn and you took your turn at a few of the "rides." Afterwards, you excitedly rushed to me, climbing up on the bench. "Was it fun buddy??!" "Yeah!! Can I have some fishy crackers please?" (How could I resist, what with the random politeness and all.)

So we sat for a minute and then Dad asked you to join him in a store while I continued to sit and feed your sister. Your path took you right past one of those mall-eye-brow-threader-stands. And a woman sat, bent backwards, while another woman used a thin thread to pull tiny hairs out of her eyebrows. Your head turned and you continued to watch as Dad led you away.

I was struck by how funny it was. You, this tiny little guy, watching this super weird thing. And how big and wide open and weird and crazy is this life? You have so much to learn, to see. Everything from eye brow threaders in a mall to god knows what else. Somehow it reminded me of how little we are. How much we learn, and how quickly we learn it. How quickly we forget to see the world as full of interest, and how quickly we can be reminded of it through the eyes of babes.

How lucky I am, amidst the tears and tiredness and growing pains, to be a witness to your learning. How lucky I am to have you as my teacher.

Overheard

Me (carrying Adelyn in the carseat down the steps to my car, rushing): Come on, bud. Let's get in Mama's car to go to school!

Teddy (standing on the top step): But! I'm just checking the weather!

Me (slightly impatient): The weather? Well, ok, what is the weather like today, buddy?

Teddy (face to the sky): There's just blue sky. And wind.

Me: So we could say it's a little breezy today?

Teddy: Yeah! Breezy! (pause) Actually it's probably a beautiful day!

- faces (on people and toys)
- her brother
- tags
- her hands and mouth

- pulling on our hair/skin (ouchy!)

Oh baby girl, our Mae-Mae, you are really starting to shine these days. You have opinions and you share them with us. You grunt and screech more than coo, but you seem proud of yourself nonetheless; your fiestiness on full display. You will not be ignored, that's for sure! And I wouldn't want to. You have things to say these days, and we are all ears.
